This year’s hurricane season is one for the record books

  • September 22, 2026

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has been one for the record books, but not in the way you may think. As of today, the season has seen six systems. All six systems have reached tropical storm force strength, which means we have not seen a hurricane.

Hurricane information.

In fact, when looking at the records this season stands out. When you dive deeper, the latest first hurricane to form in the satellite era was September 11th.

The satellite era refers to when NASA launched the TIROS-1 satellite (the world’s first successful meteorological satellite) in 1960.

This was the first time in history that we were able to view clouds and storms in space. Until then, forecasters relied only on land-based stations.

It is important to note that prior to this, storms over open water often went undetected because they had no interaction with land.

Tropical Storm Faye almost reached hurricane strength on Sunday. The system reach winds of 70 mph, but hurricane strength is 74 mph and higher. Faye has weakened and further weakening is expected before the system dissipates later this week.

Tropical weather outlook.

Looking ahead over the next week, one area off the coast of Africa has a low chance for development. We will continue to monitor the basin and give you the latest information should things change.
