TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tallahassee city commissioners are set to approve a historical marker for a longtime housing activist in the capital city.
Commissioners will vote Wednesday to honor Oliver Hill Sr. with a historical marker at the Columbia Gardens at South City Apartments.
That is the site where the Orange Avenue Apartments were built in 1972. A year earlier, Oliver co-founded a tenants association to advocate for better conditions.
When the apartments were razed to build the new complex, he was a key voice in making sure the families who lived there were not forgotten in the process.

His daughter, Tifany Hill, said her father’s legacy has improved the lives of countless families.
“My dad has always been a fighter,” Tifany said. “You know, he always has been a leader that actually led from the front. He did not just talk about stuff. He did it. He taught us as his children to be very respectful of folks, no matter if they agree with you or not.”
Tifany said the community center at the old Orange Avenue Apartments used to bear his name, so having a marker to honor him on the new site would be a great replacement.
