A Miami man has been arrested in connection with a fraud scheme in which an elderly victim lost over $130,000 to a person posing as a bank employee, authorities said.
Kashner Nathaniel Revolus, 27, was arrested Tuesday on charges including organized fraud, grand theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, and unlawful use of a communications device, Miami-Dade jail records showed.
According to an arrest report, on July 21, the victim contacted by a person impersonating a bank representative who deceived them into giving personal identification and account login credentials.
The caller accessed the victim’s Robinhood, Goldman Sachs, and E-Trade accounts, then conducted unauthorized cryptocurrency transactions and wire transfers totaling around $98,000, the report said.
During the call, the victim also told the person he’d left his credit card at a Coral Gables restaurant. After realizing he’d been defrauded, the victim contacted the restaurant and learned the card had been released to an unknown male.
The restaurant had received a call from the same number that called the victim, with the caller claiming to be a relative of the victim and requesting to pick up the card, the report said.
After the card was picked up, multiple unauthorized transactions were made, including two large purchases at the Apple stores at The Falls and Dadeland Mall involving iPhones, MacBooks and iPads totaling $36,778, the report said.
Surveillance footage from the Apple stores showed two males making the purchases, with one of them matching the description of the man who’d picked up the credit card from the restaurant and the other identified as Revolus by a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detective who’d previously arrested him, the report said.
Records showed the number that called the victim was for a prepaid phone that had been at Revolus’ home, and the phone was later found in his room when a search warrant was executed at the home, the report said.
Revolus was booked into jail and on Wednesday appeared before a judge, who mentioned that the victim is 86 years old.
The judge appointed Revolus a public defender and set his bond at $45,000.
The report didn’t say whether any other arrests had been made in the investigation.
