NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — A North Fort Myers woman is facing a court hearing over her unfinished roof four years after Hurricane Ian damaged her home.

Sue Kuhns hired Veterans Roofing a year ago to fix the hurricane damage on her North Fort Myers home. The company came out and did most of the work but never finished the project, leaving soffits and eaves unfinished.

“She wasn’t answering any of my phone calls or my text messages off of either of her phone numbers,” Kuhns said.

The work permit for the roof has expired, and the company never completed a final inspection. Now, code enforcement is pursuing violations against Kuhns for the incomplete work.

“Now, code enforcement is trying to nail me because they didn’t do a final inspection,” Kuhns said.

WINK News reached out to Veterans Roofing. Owner Melanie Hotle said she was in the process of renewing her county license and would then schedule the final inspection.

County records show her license has not been updated and no new permits have been pulled. When WINK News followed up with Hotle about the delay, she said she would take care of it before Oct. 1.

“Why should I come out of my pocket when I’m not the one that messed up?” Kuhns said.

Kuhns has already made her final payment but is left with an unfinished roof and code enforcement violations to deal with.

“Why should a veteran’s company be treating another fellow veteran this way?” Kuhns said. “They’re the professionals. I’m not. I’m just a veteran trying to make it in the world.”

Kuhns has to face the hearing examiner on Oct. 5 for her code violations, which could lead to fines.
