For most drivers, getting pulled over for a minor traffic violation results in a frustrating ticket and a slightly higher insurance premium. But for one Florida father, a disputed traffic stop escalated into a terrifying driveway takedown at gunpoint and a two-year battle against felony charges.
His only reliable witness? The external cameras mounted on his own car.
Following a grueling two-year legal nightmare, Winter Springs resident Kevin Finley was completely acquitted of felony fleeing and eluding charges after his Tesla’s built-in cameras proved he had absolutely no idea the police were actually trying to pull him over.
“This is, like, a simple, argumentatively, a traffic violation, and now I have a gun in my face, and I’m arrested in my driveway, and my neighbors are watching,” Finley explained to FOX 35 Orlando.
The Unmarked Cruiser and the Blind Spot
The incident began as Finley was driving home after dropping his kids off at school. As he prepared to make a left turn, he noticed a vehicle stopped awkwardly in the median. Believing the car was either broken down or attempting a slow U-turn, Finley safely drove past it.
He had no idea the vehicle was actually an unmarked Winter Springs police cruiser.

The officer immediately attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Finley kept driving. Inside the unmarked cruiser, the officer’s dashcam recorded his immediate, escalating assumption: “He’s trying to take off on me”.
However, the Tesla’s rear-facing cameras captured the same moment from Finley’s perspective, revealing a massive flaw in the officer’s narrative. The footage proved that while the unmarked cruiser’s flashing red and blue lights were visible for a split second, the curved geometry of the road and nearby buildings almost instantly completely blocked the police vehicle from Finley’s line of sight.
The Gunpoint Driveway Takedown
Blissfully unaware that he was allegedly “fleeing” a traffic stop, Finley arrived at his home, pulled his Tesla into the garage, and began to close the door. Moments later, he heard sirens blaring outside.
When Finley reopened his garage door to see what was happening, he was met by officers with their service weapons drawn.
“Let me see your hands!” the officer screamed on the bodycam footage as a terrified, pajama-clad Finley immediately complied.

Despite Finley pleading with the officers and repeatedly explaining that he never saw the emergency lights or heard the sirens, the arresting officer was entirely unconvinced. In a shocking moment captured on the officer’s own body camera, he can be heard openly deliberating how aggressively he wants to ruin Finley’s life over the misunderstanding.
“I don’t know if I’m going to hit him with the felony side of fleeing and elude, or I’m going to hit him with all the traffic infractions,” the officer casually debated.
He ultimately chose the maximum penalty, slapping Finley with a misdemeanor for reckless driving and a severe felony charge for fleeing police.
A Two-Year Legal Nightmare Ends
The charges threw Finley’s life into complete chaos. He spent the next two years fighting the felony indictment, waiting for his day in court so he could finally present the Tesla’s video logs.
When the trial finally arrived, the digital evidence was so overwhelmingly clear that the judge outright acquitted Finley of all charges before the case was even handed over to the jury for deliberation.
Following the acquittal, Winter Springs Police Chief Matt Tracht declined to comment specifically on the traffic stop due to pending litigation, but issued a statement defending the aggressive tactics.

“Every vehicle stop carries a significant amount of uncertainty. Officers have very little to no information about the person they are contacting,” Chief Tracht stated. “When that uncertainty is combined with erratic or reckless driving, the level of concern and tension increases substantially”.
While Finley’s criminal nightmare is officially over, the battle with the Winter Springs Police Department may just be beginning. Following his total acquittal, Finley confirmed he is actively weighing his options for a civil lawsuit against the department.
The viral case has even drawn the attention of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who recently highlighted the story on X (formerly Twitter), proudly declaring: “A Tesla saves its owner from prison!”
