Construction begins Wednesday on West Mitchell Hammock Road in Oviedo
Drivers in Oviedo should prepare for changes as construction begins Wednesday on West Mitchell Hammock Road, with improvements aimed at enhancing safety and traffic flow.
“This is not just a city road. This gets people to Orange County. It gets people to the other side of Seminole County. It’s for everybody,” Oviedo Mayor Megan Sladek said.
The project will span from just east of State Road 426 to west of South Lake Jessup Avenue and includes minor road widening, a new raised median and an 8-foot sidewalk.
“There is no sidewalk on that north side right now, and I have personally — to avoid crossing the road and crossing it again — I’ve walked through the grass, which is OK, but it’ll be nice to have a sidewalk there,” Sladek said.
She added, “The raised median is going to create a better buffer and a more safe situation than what we have right now, which is ‘suicide lanes.'”
During the first phase of construction, the right westbound lane will close and traffic will shift into the center lane, which will be converted into a westbound through lane. The city stated there will still be two westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes.
“426 is now completed, and that is the thing we were waiting for before beginning Mitchell Hammock Road work, so there is an alternate route if people are concerned about delays, but we’re going to do our very best to just keep that traffic flowing,” Sladek said.
The city said traffic control devices will be in place to protect drivers and construction crews. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and allow extra time when traveling through the work zone. Construction is expected to continue through June 2027.
