Sept. 11 is a day on which we say the names. All of the names.
To have members of Task Force 2 present, yet fail to recognize each of them by name, was a deeply disappointing and glaring omission – particularly when two of those left unnamed, former Fire Chief John Gilbert and Ron Erbel, are no longer here to receive that honor in person.
Ron’s death has been formally recognized as a consequence of his service in the aftermath of 9/11 by every pertinent organization except the Village of Key Biscayne, the village he served selflessly for decades. His omission was especially painful, conspicuous and shocking.
Whether this was an oversight or a deliberate slight, it was a missed opportunity to honor every member’s service and sacrifice. Please rectify this error in the 2027 presentation and ensure that every member of Task Force 2 is recognized by name.
