A Broward County man allegedly broke into an Airbnb in Fort Lauderdale planning to commit a robbery but was instead shot by the guest renting the home, according to police.

Fort Lauderdale Police were called to the 800 block of Northwest 19th Avenue about 6 p.m. Thursday, where they found Dareon Pubien, 18, of Fort Lauderdale, shot in his torso, said Sgt. Patrick O’Brien, a spokesperson for the police department. Pubien was taken to Broward Health Medical Center.

Pubien allegedly had a gun when he went inside the Airbnb, police said. “An altercation” ensued with the man renting the property, according to O’Brien. The renter shot Pubien, who ran away and was found in the nearby area by officers.

Police said Sean Thompson, 25, of Margate, was arrested later as an accomplice in the attempted robbery. The police department did not provide information about Thompson’s alleged involvement or details about where its Gun Intelligence Unit found and arrested him.

Thompson was held in the Broward Main Jail as of Friday on one count of attempted felony murder and one count of home invasion with a firearm.

Pubien remained in the hospital Friday and will be booked later into the Main Jail on the same charges, O’Brien said.

Court records with additional details were not available Friday.

The police department has not released the name of the Airbnb renter. Detectives are investigating the shooting as self-defense, O’Brien said.
