Cape Coral installs 100 of 800 signs as residential speed limits drop to 25 mph
Cape Coral is reducing speed limits in residential neighborhoods from 30 mph to 25 mph, with city crews installing 800 new signs as part of the project, which is expected to take two to three months to complete.
The city said four workers are replacing the speed limit signs, and the process has been underway since last week. Gino Gonzalez, a traffic technician in Cape Coral, is helping pinpoint the locations of signs that need to be replaced.
Gonzalez and his team are changing the signs one by one, splitting the work by quadrants to cover the city more efficiently. “Can only be in one place, at one time, you know, it’s just traffic, and time getting to one area,” he said.
The city said the change is based on a speed limit study and feedback from more than 460 residents.
The project, which costs about $57,000, has already made progress in areas like Northwest 9th Street off Chiquita Boulevard.
Gonzalez said he takes pride in the work, knowing it contributes to a safer city. He hopes the new signs will encourage drivers to slow down.
