JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County — Jacksonville police say a shooting at a recreational football practice Monday evening was not random and stemmed from an altercation between two adults.

The shooting happened around 6:02 p.m. Sept. 28 at an open athletic field behind Jacksonville Commons Elementary School.

Police said the victim and suspect are both adults and knew each other. Investigators believe an altercation between the two led up to the shooting.

Witnesses at the scene told police the suspect left in a vehicle after the shooting.

Jacksonville police said investigators have identified a suspect as they continue working to determine what happened before the shooting.

“That’s something that we are looking into right now,” Jacksonville Police Department Captain Funcke said. “We do know there was some altercation that happened at the practice, so they are looking at anything — what, if anything, occurred before this incident.”

The adult male who was shot was taken to a local hospital. Police said he is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police stressed the shooting was not connected to Onslow County Schools or any school activity. The people involved were at a recreational football practice taking place on the athletic fields behind the elementary school.

The investigation remains ongoing.
