A 27-year-old man being held in a Hillsborough County jail died in a hospital early Sunday, six days after he was found unresponsive in his cell, deputies said.

Deputies found Liam J. Thomas unresponsive in his cell at the Orient Road Jail in Tampa about 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 21, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Thomas had injuries that appeared to be self-inflicted, deputies said.

Thomas was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he remained until he was pronounced dead at 1:27 a.m. Sunday.

Thomas’ death remains under investigation.

Thomas, of Tampa, was arrested Sept. 4 on charges of armed drug trafficking and armed possession of drugs with the intent to deliver, records show. His bond was set at $162,500, and his arraignment was scheduled for Oct. 28. He had not yet entered a plea in the case.
