Last year, Tatiana Mesa Paján was among Creative Loafing Tampa Bay’s emerging artists to watch, and she’s kept busy.
Last March, the Cuban artist expressed interest in giving an American icon the same treatment she’s brought to other sculptures by filling them with dandelions. “The Statue of Liberty will continue this series, bringing softness to something hard—this time to a bronze surface,” she wrote in an email to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay.
“Libertad” found a commission, and a home at the OXH Gallery founded by artist Odeta Xheka which is displaying the bronze statue covered with dandelions as part of a two-person show, “Redo: siempre/përsëri (always/again)” (stylized “REDO”).
The show features work from Paján and Xheka, and last Friday, the gallery hosted a conversation featuring Dr. Alexis Mootoo, president of Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, and Creative Loafing photographer Dave Decker.
The show closes at OXH Gallery, located at 1646 W Snow Ave. in Hyde Park, on Oct. 16.
