Police officers at UCF Downtown in Orlando prevented a tragedy where a man was preparing to harm himself, according to local law enforcement.

According to the UCF Police Department, when officers arrived to the scene of a mental health call at UCF Downtown, they found a man in immediate danger who was preparing to harm himself.

“Thanks to their quick actions, teamwork, and calm decision-making, the officers were able to safely intervene and prevent a tragedy,” the UCF Police Department posted. “The individual – who is not affiliated with the university – was connected with the resources, care, and support he needed.”

If a community member did not reach out to law enforcement, the situation could have ended differently.

“We are grateful to the community member who recognized that something was wrong and immediately called for help,” the UCF Police Department continued. “Had they not spoken up, or had officers not arrived when they did, the situation could have ended very differently. We are proud of Officers Colvin and McDaniel for their quick response, compassion, and commitment to helping others during someone’s time of greatest need.”
