BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Three juveniles were rescued from the ocean Monday night after their boat capsized about two miles offshore from the Port Everglades Inlet, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Broward County Regional Communications received the report at about 8:45 p.m. Sept. 28 involving a 17-foot Boston Whaler, authorities said.
Broward Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Deputy Alexander Beer and Harbor Patrol Deputy Rajendra Sukhdeo, assigned to the Port Everglades District, were the first responders to reach the area, BSO said. They found the overturned boat and the three juveniles in the water.
Investigators said the juveniles used a light on a cellphone to help deputies find them in the darkness.
Video released by BSO shows the nighttime rescue as deputies brought the juveniles aboard a sheriff’s office vessel one at a time. The juveniles were transported to a Fort Lauderdale boat ramp and were not injured, BSO said.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue also responded. Sea Tow later recovered the vessel.
