VENICE, Fla. (WINK) — Venice police arrested a third suspect in connection with an armed home invasion that happened in September on Laurel Road East in Venice.

43-year-old Frankie Mercado Jr. of Cape Coral was arrested for his role in planning and facilitating the home invasion robbery. Two Texas men, Justin Mitchell and Brevaun Williams, allegedly forcibly entered a residence in the 3000 block of Laurel Road East on Sept. 23, restrained the homeowner and demanded access to safes.

During the incident, authorities said one suspect stole the homeowner’s handgun and fired toward a family member who came to assist. The family member was not struck.

Both suspects allegedly fled on foot and were later apprehended by Venice police with assistance from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit. VPD K-9 Palmer recovered the firearm.

During the follow-up investigation, detectives developed information identifying Mercado as an associate of Williams.

Evidence obtained through witness statements, surveillance footage, License Plate Reader data and other investigative efforts established probable cause that Mercado assisted in planning the targeted robbery, provided information about the victim and residence, supplied equipment used during the offense and transported the suspects to the area before the crime occurred.

Investigators determined Mercado knew the homeowner through prior business interactions and provided Williams and Mitchell with information about the residence.

Mercado has been charged with home invasion robbery with a weapon, kidnapping, burglary with battery and aggravated assault.

“This case is a testament to the professionalism and dedication of our officers and law enforcement partners,” Venice Police Chief Andy Leisenring said. “From the initial response and apprehension of the suspects to the continued investigative work that led to locating the suspect vehicle and arresting a third suspect, every stage of this case reflected outstanding teamwork and commitment.”

Police said this incident remains isolated and investigators have identified no ongoing threat to the public, with all suspects accounted for.
