For more than a decade, Orlando Bloom’s Malibu house was closely tied to his life in California. The actor bought the property in 2011 with his then-wife, model Miranda Kerr, paying about $2.5 million for the house above El Matador State Beach. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, fifteen years later, the four-bedroom property is back on the market, this time with an asking price of $12 million. Bloom has since moved further north and said he has not lived at the Malibu house for several years. Before deciding to sell, he had also rented it out. Much of the property’s current character came from an extensive renovation, with Bloom spending more than twice his original purchase price on the work.
How Bloom’s 2011 Malibu purchase became a family home
Bloom and Kerr purchased the property in 2011, when the house was a relatively modest 1970s-era residence in a gated Malibu community. Property records put the purchase price at roughly $2.5 million. The location was a major part of its appeal. The house occupies less than half an acre, with steps leading from the property towards the beach. Bloom said the combination of privacy and direct access to the coastline was what initially attracted him.The house also became part of his family life. Their son, Flynn, spent much of his early childhood in Malibu. After Bloom and Kerr separated in 2013, Kerr continued living nearby for a period so that Flynn could remain close to both parents.
The $2.5 million house underwent a major transformation
The property Bloom bought was not left in its original condition. He carried out a substantial renovation, with the cost exceeding twice what he had paid for the house. The lower level received some of the biggest changes. Bloom described the original layout as awkward and had it reworked into a more open arrangement, creating a larger living and kitchen area. The renovation also brought in a pool positioned to face the ocean.Inside, the house has a distinctive mix of materials and colour rather than a restrained neutral palette. Beamed ceilings and tiled floors sit alongside colourful Mexican tiles, while the kitchen cabinetry is finished in sea-foam green. The bathrooms use strong blue and yellow tones.
The Malibu interiors reflect Bloom’s interest in art and design
McMakin designed custom finishes for the house as well as furniture, which can be included in the sale Bloom’s interest in design led him to the artist and furniture designer Roy McMakin. “I was walking around showing his book to people and I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll just go straight to the horse’s mouth.”“I found his contact online. He was familiar with me, and we had a meeting.” McMakin created custom finishes for the Malibu property as well as furniture for the rooms. Bloom said some of those pieces could be included in the sale. The result is a house with a slight Japanese influence, according to Bloom, but it does not follow a single decorative style throughout. The interiors combine the custom work with colourful surfaces and practical spaces, while the outdoor areas extend the living space towards the coastline.

Bloom’s Malibu home includes a pool, spa and barrel sauna
The renovated property has several features designed around its setting. A covered deck provides space for outdoor dining, while the pool and spa sit outside with views towards the Pacific. There is also a wet bar and a barrel sauna. A garage serves a more personal purpose for Bloom, who has used it to store his motorcycle collection. The surrounding Malibu roads were another attraction for the actor. He said the canyons offered easy access to drives from the house, adding to the property’s appeal beyond the beach itself.
Bloom eventually decided it was time to sell
Despite his long connection with the house, Bloom said he had not lived there for several years after moving further north in California. He did not disclose the location of his current home. The decision to sell appears to have followed a period of reassessing how the property was being used. Bloom rented the Malibu house out last year and said that experience made him realise he was unlikely to return to living there. That did not make the decision entirely straightforward. Bloom acknowledged that he was reluctant to let the property go, having owned it since 2011 and substantially reshaped it during that time.
The $12 million listing marks a major change in value
According to The Wall Street Journal, Bloom is now asking $12 million for the house. That is nearly five times the approximately $2.5 million he and Kerr paid when they bought it. The difference is not simply a reflection of the Malibu market. Bloom has put a considerable amount of money into the property, spending more than twice the original purchase price on renovations and adding features including the redesigned lower floor, pool and customised interiors. The listing comes after a period of disruption in Malibu’s property market. Listing agent Chris Cortazzo of Compass told The Wall Street Journal that activity had picked up in recent weeks and said conditions had settled following the wildfires of the previous year.
Bloom’s Malibu years also overlapped with his relationship with Katy Perry
The property remained part of Bloom’s life during his long relationship with singer Katy Perry. The couple dated for close to a decade before confirming their split in 2025. During their relationship, an entity connected with Bloom and Perry also became involved in the purchase of a Montecito property. That deal followed years of legal disputes with entrepreneur Carl Westcott, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The Malibu property is separate from that deal and has now reached the market on its own terms. For Bloom, the $12 million listing represents the end of a property chapter that began with a $2.5 million purchase in 2011. The house has since been extensively altered, used as his primary residence for more than a decade and later rented out. Its next owner will inherit not just the ocean-facing setting, but a home that was extensively redesigned around Bloom’s own tastes.
