JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The suspect in this week’s shooting behind a Jacksonville elementary school has been given no bond.
In a virtual court appearance Thursday, 27-year-old Zavone Farrior was given no bond.
Onslow County deputies charged Farrior Wednesday with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and assault with a deadly weapon in the presence of a minor.
26-year-old Areon Laurent has been charged with accessory after the fact and was given a $25,000 bond.
“They both left the scene together and were present at the altercation that occurred so she was engaged in the verbal portion of the altercation and Zavion is the one that fired the shot,” said Interim Jacksonville Police Chief Ashley Weaver.
Police said the shooting happened just after 6 p.m. Monday behind Jacksonville Commons Elementary School, where one person shot another at the athletic fields.
A police spokesperson said 27-year-old Nijear Singleton was shot in the hip and taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown.
According to the assistant district attorney, Farrior left the field in Laurent’s car after the shooting.
Police said the suspects were at a recreational sports practice when the shooting happened. Officers told WITN it was not connected to any Onslow County Schools activities.
Farrior also had several outstanding warrants, including one for an attempted breaking and entering in New Hanover County.
