St. Petersburg, FL – A St. Petersburg pediatric emergency physician is reaching millions of people online after sharing a social media post focused on childhood cancer awareness and families affected by the disease.
Dr. Meghan Martin, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, published the post during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed each September.
Martin, known as @Beachgem10 on social media, regularly creates videos providing information about children’s health, illnesses, injuries and emergency medical care.
Her pediatric cancer post featured Martin holding a series of signs containing facts and messages about childhood cancer. The video quickly gained attention across social media, receiving millions of views and thousands of responses.
Martin said the post was intended to increase awareness about pediatric cancer and highlight the experiences of children receiving treatment and their families.
Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg treats pediatric patients with a variety of medical conditions. Its Cancer and Blood Disorders Institute provides treatment for children and young adults diagnosed with conditions including leukemia, lymphoma and solid tumors.
Martin has developed a large online following by sharing medical information aimed primarily at parents and caregivers.
She began creating TikTok videos during the COVID-19 pandemic and later expanded her audience to more than 1 million followers.
Her previous social media content has addressed topics including childhood fevers, burns, injuries, emergency room visits and other health concerns affecting children.
The latest post was released as hospitals, advocacy organizations and families across the country marked Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Martin said the widespread response allowed the pediatric cancer message to reach people beyond her existing social media audience and draw additional attention to children and families dealing with cancer.
