St. Petersburg, Fla. — The St. Thomas’ Art Project is pleased to exhibit work by St. Petersburg’s mosaic artist Donna Slawsky from October 2 through November 1, 2026.  All are invited for the opening reception on October 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, 1200 Snell Isle Blvd. NE, St. Petersburg.  The artist will join us and light refreshments will be served.

Slawsky’s work is inspired by the designs on fine china, found objects, stained glass, religion, and in the natural world. She loves to create art from broken objects that might otherwise be discarded. Almost all of her work uses re-purposed materials.   She’s been a mosaic artist for over 16 years after studying at the Unicorn Art Studio in New York.

Slawsky loves the tactile nature of her work and finds that breaking something to create something beautiful is a metaphor for life, where we also have the chance to make something beautiful out of something broken.  Slawsky appreciates the detail required of mosaic art.  The colors, textures, and natural surroundings of Florida’s Gulf Coast inspire her to create works that celebrate the beauty of the world around us. Her admiration for the natural world, particularly birds, is reflected in her meticulous attention to detail and her desire to capture the spirit and character of each subject. Lately, Slawsky also has been exploring political and civil rights themes.

Slawsky teaches mosaics at the Morean Arts Center. Her work has been displayed in venues throughout our area, including Florida CraftArt Gallery, the Morean Arts Center, and the Dunedin Fine Art Center.  Her Judaica pieces appear in the Florida Holocaust Museum gift shop in downtown St. Petersburg.

In 2023, Slawsky won first place in the Florida CraftArt Gallery “Rebels” exhibition with her piece “Say Their Names.” and has received honorable mention in an exhibit in the Artists Guild Gallery in Holmes Beach.

Slawsky and her husband moved to the Gulf Coast of Florida in 2011 from Greenwich Village. They opened a successful restaurant and gallery in the Bradenton Village of the Arts (now closed).

Since 2019, The St. Thomas’ Art Project has used the creative arts for the glory of God and to welcome the broader community to St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church on Snell Isle. Our hope is to enhance our worship, foster creative expression, and offer hospitality.

Each year we have invited numerous national and local artists to exhibit and sell their work in our sanctuary.  St. Thomas’ has installed professional lighting and a display system to showcase each artist’s work.  Past exhibits have included work by Ludmila Pawlowska, Dee Perconti, the Black Art Matters Tampa Collective, Ellen Burkhart, Creative Clay and Parc Center for Disabilities, Paul Nucci, and Lisa Hinkley.

We are proud to welcome AGalban in November.

December opens with an exhibition of a selected volume and prints from the Saint John’s Bible, the first fully handwritten, hand-illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine monastery (Saint John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota) since the invention of the printing press more than 500 years ago.   Please visit our website at https://www.stthomasstpete.org/art-project.html to learn more about upcoming shows.
