Officers learned that the U-Haul had been parked in violation of homeowner association restrictions, and the contracted tow company was attempting to remove it.

During the tow attempt, the person intervened, police said.

A second tow truck was positioned behind the U-Haul to prevent it from leaving.

After the person refused to pay a drop fee, he entered the U-Haul, backed off the tow truck and struck the tow truck parked behind him, police said.

He then continued to drive forward and reverse repeatedly until he freed the U-Haul from between the two vehicles, police said.

The person drove down the street, where responding officers located him shortly afterward.

No injuries were reported.

The U-Haul was towed and the man was taken to the St. Lucie County Jail.

Police didn’t identify him.
