ORLANDO, Fla. — Starting Monday, a 45-day warning period will be in place for drivers speeding in 20 Orlando school zones where the city has installed speed cameras.
City staff said the schools were selected after being identified by an internal study that looked at numerous factors, including crash history, vehicle speeds and pedestrian activity.
The cameras use radar and photography to capture vehicles driving more than 10 mph over the speed limit in an active school zone.
“When we talk about safety, making sure our kids make it safe to school, that 15- or 20-mile flashing light, it means nothing for some folks,” said Orlando Commissioner Shan Rose.
During the warning period, drivers caught speeding will be mailed a warning notice, not a ticket, city staff said.
Enforcement is set to begin Nov. 30, after the 45-day warning period ends. Violations will carry a $100 fine.
“I think the biggest thing is our officers can’t be in every square inch of this city, and so being able to put additional barriers in our schools to protect our kids is what’s most important,” Rose said.
According to city officials, most of the money collected from violations will stay with the city to operate the school-zone speed detection systems and support other public safety initiatives. Some money will also go to the Florida Department of Revenue, Orange County Public Schools and the county for the School Crossing Guard Recruitment Retention Program.
Rose said she’s already heard positive feedback from the community.
“The families in the schools are really excited and I have the rest of the schools in my district go like, ‘OK, when are we getting ours?’ And so there’s a lot of excitement,” Rose said.
The cameras are active before and after school, with the timing based on each school’s bell schedule.
