Federal officials seized fuel shipments valued at $2.8 million that were suspected of being “unlawfully exported to Cuba,” they said in a news release.

Officials said they intercepted 90 shipments of biodiesel-blended middle distillate bound for a “sanctioned Cuban entity” as part of a scheme to evade sanctions.

Agencies involved in the seizure include Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS).

Authorities are expected to discuss the seizure in a news conference at 9:30 a.m. at the Homeland Security Investigations Miami field office.

On Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced it had interdicted a vessel trafficking fuel to Cuba. Officials tell NBC6 the seizures are not related.
