The name Isaias, a Spanish form of Isaiah, is traditionally pronounced “ee-sah-EE-ahs,” with the stress on the third syllable.
It can be broken into syllables as “ee • sah • EE • ahs,” and Spanish speakers typically emphasize the third syllable.
Variations such as “ee-SAY-us” or “eye-SAY-us” may also be heard, but “ee-sah-EE-ahs” is the traditional Spanish pronunciation.
Tropical Storm Isaias, the ninth named storm of the season, formed Wednesday morning in the southwestern Gulf. It is expected to rapidly strengthen over the next couple of days.
As of the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the storm was located about 285 miles west of Progreso, Mexico, and about 580 miles southwest of the Mouth of the Mississippi River.
Isaias was moving east-northeast at 8 mph with 40-mph maximum sustained winds.
Florida has declared a state of emergency in 25 counties.
Isaias will likely become the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
