A Jacksonville City Council member will be temporarily suspended from her role as a Duval County Public Schools teacher for misconduct.
With little discussion during Tuesday’s board meeting, the Duval County School Board voted to suspend Tyrona Clark-Murray, who represents District 9 and is employed as an ESE teacher at Alfred I. duPont Middle School. The suspension will last ten days, during which she will not be paid.
In May 2025, Clark-Murray self-reported an incident in which she had allegedly been kicked by a student, then kicked them back.
Clark-Murray did not face any criminal charges, but was “temporarily reassigned to a role with no student contact pending the outcome of a human resources investigation,” according to the district.
Stephanie Schaap, Tyrona Clark Murray’s attorney, spoke during public comment. She said that she sent an email Tuesday requesting that an unnamed board member recuse herself from the vote due to accusatory statements previously made on social media. She said these statements showed “clear bias and prejudice” prior to the conclusion of the investigation into Clark-Murray’s actions.
Ultimately, all members participated in a vote on the suspension and several other items included in the consent agenda.
Vice Chair April Carney said she believed this was the largest number of employee disciplinary actions the board has had to consider in quite some time.
“Anyone that is brought before professional standards, they are afforded due process,” Carney said following the vote. “It is our job as board members, after the investigation is complete, to be fair and impartial when making our decisions as applied by Florida law.
She emphasized that employees are allowed to appeal any disciplinary decision against them.
