FORT PIERCE – An 11,346-square-foot building at 2817 Peters Road took another step toward becoming a new preschool for youngsters from 18 months to 5 years of age.
Indira Ceville appeared before the Fort Pierce City Commission Monday night to explain what Agape Preschool Academy will offer if the city approved a minor site plan use for the location with no new construction expected.
The school will include 13 classrooms, indoor and outdoor play areas, a therapy room, administrative area and a staff lounge.
Ceville said entering and exiting traffic will be routed to avoid a lineup of vehicles on public streets.
Officials said the building, with a market value of about $9.3 million, will be open to students from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and parents will be responsible for transporting children to and from the school.
Ceville said during its first year, Agape will not serve breakfast or lunch, requiring students to bring provisions from home. After that, the school may begin offering onsite meals.
The property is now zoned general commercial and commissioners agreed to issue a conditional use for the preschool if the operator applies for sign permits and submits a change of use application before the building is occupied.
In other business Monday, commissioners approved allocating $300,000 of federal Community Development Block Grant funds for a joint project with St. Lucie County to improve the Arthur Lee Boatwright Pool.
Officials said the Lincoln Park neighborhood recreation site needs “substantial rehabilitation to ensure its continued safe and reliable operation.”
