FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — Two women in Fort Pierce are accused of animal neglect after a dog died on their watch, according to arrest reports from the Fort Pierce Police Department.

FPPD says that Samya Shanice Bryant, 25, and Danielle Amanda Potts, 28, were arrested on Oct. 2 in connection with the neglect and death of a dog at Pine Creek Apartments.

Officers found the dog days before on Sept. 29 lying outside an apartment. The dog was severely underweight with visible ribs, infected sores on his paws, and no food or water.

Bryant told the officers that the dog was hers, and that he had been sick for weeks after another man allegedly poured boiling water on him. FPPD says that both women — who each lived in the apartment — had control of the dog but did not get him veterinary treatment.

Animal Control took the dog for emergency care, but the dog had to be euthanized on Oct. 2 because of injuries, infections and organ failure.

Both Bryant and Potts were arrested and are being charged with aggravated animal cruelty and confining/impounding an animal without sufficient food or water.
