The 24th annual Buddy Walk brings Jacksonville families together to celebrate inclusion and raise money for programs supporting people with Down syndrome.

Rain or shine, hundreds of families, friends and supporters are expected to come together Saturday, October 10 to celebrate inclusion at the Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville’s 24th annual Buddy Walk.

The event, the organization’s largest annual celebration and fundraiser, brings the community together to celebrate people with Down syndrome while raising money for programs that support them and their families.

Those programs include family support, recreation opportunities, educational workshops, advocacy and scholarships to help families access services such as speech and occupational therapy.

“We’re focused on the idea of inclusion, helping people understand that individuals with Down syndrome can do some of the same things that typical people can do,” said TJ Ward, executive director of the Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville. “We really want to make sure that we are emphasizing the importance of our people being valued, respected and celebrated.”

Ward said the Buddy Walk is an opportunity for the community to come together, raise awareness and recognize the contributions and potential of people with Down syndrome.

The association provides programs for people of all ages, from birth through adulthood, along with educational opportunities for parents and community members who want to learn more about Down syndrome.

Ward, who recently took over as executive director, said he hopes to continue strengthening the association’s support for families in Jacksonville and potentially expand services into neighboring counties.
