Hundreds gather at Florida Capitol to honor slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk

  • October 15, 2025

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) – Communities around the nation are remembering Charlie Kirk on what would have been his 32nd birthday.

The conservative activist was shot and killed at a campus event in Utah about a month ago.

Wakulla County Schools held a day of civil discourse on Tuesday, and Florida lawmakers filed a bill to make Oct. 14 Charlie Kirk Day every year.

In the capital city, a vigil in honor of Kirk drew a crowd of people in the Capitol courtyard.

Praise and worship music echoed in the courtyard as attendees wore red, Kirk’s favorite color, to honor the Turning Point USA founder.

Tallahassee resident Terri Alexander attended Tuesday night’s vigil for the late conservative activist.

“I love what he stood for, especially his faith. He pointed people to Jesus around the world,” Alexander said.

The emotional toll of Kirk’s death was evident among those who gathered to pay their respects.

“The hardest part to me is he was assassinated for his words. That’s what’s really disheartening,” Alexander said.

Mitchell Morgan of Monticello also attended the vigil and described Kirk as “a man who was bold enough and courageous enough to stand up for his faith who put his country and his faith ahead of his own well-being.”

Kirk was known for encouraging political debate, even among those with opposing viewpoints.

Alexander emphasized this aspect of his character, saying Kirk “was trying to get people to see you can disagree and still be okay.”
