JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Mandarin Mustangs are stacking wins.
Mandarin beat Lake Mary 33-17 to move to 5-1, giving the Mustangs back-to-back victories and a little breathing room before the stretch that matters most: three straight district games.
Momentum is building — but the question inside the program is the same one it’s been all season.
How do you keep it?
At practice this week, head coach Toby Bullock put it bluntly.
“Not to believe that they’re too good,” Bullock said. “Because they’re not.”
With district play tightening the margins, Bullock said the Mustangs’ first goal is clear: win the district — again.
“We won four districts in a row,” Bullock said. “We want to make it a fifth.”
And the path to another district title runs through the trenches.
It’s a young group up front for the Mustangs on offense — two starting juniors and three starting sophomores — still learning how to play like one unit instead of five individuals. Bullock said the biggest growing pains for young linemen aren’t always physical. They’re mental.
“The number one thing with young players is communication,” he said. “Talking to each other.”
Offensive lineman Jayden Lightsey says that’s been the focus as the season has gone on — and it’s starting to show.

“Our confidence has been going up every single game,” Lightsey said.
“O-line has to be like a fist,” he said. “If all five guys are working together, a fist can knock you out.”
When it clicks, running back Shaunqueze Foster sees it immediately.
“Its like heaven and you just get to see that gate open wide open,” Foster said.
Foster says what’s impressed him about the young line isn’t that they never make mistakes — it’s that they own them, correct them, and move to the next play.
“Mistakes happen,” Foster said. “But for them to be young… and pick up their mistakes… that’s all I can ask for.”
That accountability, Lightsey says, has turned into something bigger than football.
“It’s a brotherhood,” he said.
Foster put it the same way.
“Because we’re a family,” he said. “We always found a way to bounce back.”
Now, the Mustangs head into three straight district games knowing there’s still a lot left on the table — and that the work can’t slip just because the wins are coming again.
“We’re not at our goal yet,” Lightsey said. “Jobs not done.”
