JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County — The Onslow Civic Affairs Committee will place a wreath at Jacksonville’s Freedom Fountain Friday morning in memory of Capt. Garrett Pearson.
The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9.
The committee says Pearson was a MARSOC Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune who was killed during a training exercise in Florida last week.
The Freedom Fountain will be placed in mourning status for three days, according to the committee. Only the central “Freedom jet” will remain on, while the 50 bubblers and government trio jets are turned off.
The wreath will remain at the fountain during the three-day mourning period.
Congressman Greg Murphy said in a social media post that Pearson died in a training accident in Florida. Murphy called Pearson’s death a “tragic loss” and said his office is keeping Pearson’s wife, Autumn, their children, Maisie and Hazel, his family and fellow Marines in its thoughts.
The Freedom Fountain honors people connected to local military bases who die while serving during active-duty training or combat.
News 12 has reached out to Marine officials for more information about the training incident.
