A Camp Lejeune Marine killed during a training exercise in Florida last week was honored Monday in Jacksonville as the community gathered to remember his life and service.
Capt. Garrett Pearson, a Marine with the Special Operations Command at Camp Lejeune, was remembered during a wreath-laying at the Jacksonville Freedom Fountain. The Onslow Civic Affairs Committee placed the wreath at the fountain in his memory.
Pearson is survived by his wife and two young children.
“He had 2 children he’s given his life. I hope that they can grow up and know that their dad did what he did for everyone not just a few. This is our gesture that we can show that we support him and her and the family and to the military community family,” said Carol Hearst Long of the Onslow Civic Affairs Committee.
The Freedom Fountain will remain in mourning for three days, with only its central water jet running and flags at half-staff. The wreath will remain in place throughout the three-day tribute.
