From the sounds of brass to the smells of bratwurst, Cape Coral’s Oktoberfest has been bringing people together for more than four decades.
“I think that inside all of us there’s a little bit of need for community, need for fellowship,
Gemeinschaft, excuse my German, that need for friendship, that need for closeness,” said Holly Jo King.
Holly is a publicity chair for the German American Social Club, the spot that brings Oktoberfest to life.
And every year, one tradition helps bridge the gap between the community and the culture.
“She bridges the gap between the community and our culture, and she’s definitely much needed for this situation in Oktoberfest,” said Holly.
This year, that crowned guide is Cape Coral’s Christine Blasses, representing as “Ms. Oktoberfest.”
“I think every girl, every little girl, every young woman would love to be Ms. Oktoberfest,” said Christine. “You know you’re always dressed nicely you wear a crown and a sash. I’m sure everyone dreams of that at some point in their life, I’m guessing.”
For Christine, the crown comes with meaning. She grew up in Bavaria, Germany, and this past July, became an American citizen.
“Once it sunk in, yeah, once the shock was gone, I was very excited and very honored and yeah it was very nice,” said Christine.
Sometimes, bridging cultures is finding a place where everyone belongs.
“I can’t tell you exactly what to expect, but I can tell you that you’re going to have the absolute time of your life,” said Christine. “It’s going to be fantastic.”
