The Key Biscayne Community Compost Program, run by A Zero Waste Culture and launched in 2020, collects food scraps every Saturday at the Farmers Market at Key Biscayne Community Church, 355 Glenridge Rd.
The Compost Program’s mission is to divert discarded food and other organics from landfill, reduce methane emissions and create nutrient-rich soil.
Members collect food scraps during the week and bring them to the collection station on Saturdays.
Below is the environmental impact of the Island’s composting efforts:
• 1,649 pounds of food scraps collected this past week
• 424,642 pounds collected so far, or 212.32 tons
• 138 metric tons of greenhouse gases prevented from entering the atmosphere.
That’s like:
• 350,542 miles driven
• 11.13 million smartphone charges
• 2,300 trees helping clean the air for 10 years.
