Jacksonville residents call for long-term flooding solution after storm inundates neighborhood

  • October 11, 2026

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Residents in a Jacksonville neighborhood near Beach Boulevard say repeated flooding from heavy rain continues to damage homes and disrupt daily life, and they are urging city leaders to take action after the latest storm left streets underwater.

Neighbors living near Pemberton Street said they woke up Saturday to flooded roadways and water pushing into homes following overnight rain associated with Hurricane Isaias. Residents described conditions severe enough to make driving difficult and create safety concerns throughout the community.

Residents said standing water covered roads throughout the neighborhood, leaving some areas difficult to navigate. Children were seen riding four-wheelers through flooded streets, while others described water levels high enough to make biking challenging.

Community members said flooding has been an ongoing issue for years and that repeated complaints have not resulted in a permanent solution. Dawn Brown said residents have raised concerns multiple times but have seen little progress.

“They have not listened to us, and they need to do something,” Brown said, expressing concern that future residents will continue facing the same problems if improvements are not made.

Some neighbors have attempted temporary fixes themselves. Resident Jonathan Vanderburgh said a friend who works on the road occasionally brings in sand and dirt when conditions are dry, but those efforts are often washed away by subsequent rainfall.

Residents said floodwaters can linger for days after major rain events, sometimes taking nearly a week to recede. They worry the persistent flooding threatens homes, yards, and public safety.

“They definitely need to come out here and do something,” resident Stevie Szalam said. “The yards are flooded, and that water gets into people’s houses.”

Residents said they hope the latest flooding will prompt a long-term solution to address drainage problems in the neighborhood
