Do drivers have to signal in turn-only lanes? Here’s what Florida law says

  • October 12, 2026

ORLANDO, Fla. – For longtime drivers in the Sunshine State, there have likely been plenty of times where they found themselves in a turn-only lane.

But if there’s only one way to go, do drivers still have to use their turn signals?

Well, it may be obvious to you when you’re behind the wheel, but that doesn’t mean it’s quite as clear to everyone else exactly which direction you’re going to go. And that idea is backed by state law.

Florida statutes explicitly require drivers to put on their turn signals when they’re about to go left or right — and the lane you’re in doesn’t really make a difference.

That law also requires drivers to follow several other rules, including:

How to signal: Turn signals must be given “continuously” and at least 100 feet before turning.

Slowing down: Drivers may not stop or “suddenly decrease” their vehicle’s speed without giving an appropriate signal to any driver behind them.

Disabled vehicles: Cars that are parked or disabled on the side of the road may not signal on only one side of the vehicle, and a single turn signal should not be used as a “do pass” indicator for other drivers.

Violations of the law are considered to be noncriminal traffic infractions.
