JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (CBS12) — A Florida woman was killed after the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said she fired at officers Sunday, striking a patrol vehicle, following multiple reports that she had pointed a gun at people over the weekend.

During a news conference with the Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Mark Romano, they said the investigation began around 9:15 a.m. Saturday, when officers responded to Monaco Drive near Beckner Avenue for a report of a woman wearing purple who was waving a gun. Officers did not find her.

About an hour later, officers were called to Briarcliff Road East near Dunn Avenue after receiving a report that a woman matching the description pointed a gun at a person and their dog. JSO said officers were again unable to locate her.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to Mar Vic Lane and Dunn Avenue after a caller reported a woman had pointed a gun at a man. Officers found a woman who they believed matched the description from Saturday’s calls, authorities said.

Police said the woman yelled at officers and repeatedly reached into bags she was carrying while ignoring commands to show her hands. Officers followed her for about a quarter-mile while continuing to give commands, according to the sheriff’s office.

When they reached Mar Vic Lane and Biscayne Boulevard, the woman pulled a gun from a bag and fired once, striking the driver’s-side door of a police vehicle, police said. Three officers then fired their weapons, striking the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman’s name was not immediately released as authorities worked to notify her next of kin. The sheriff’s office said it also would not release the officers’ names, citing Marsy’s Law.

The State Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal use-of-force investigation after that review is complete.

The shooting was the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office’s 15th officer-involved shooting of the year, authorities said.
