TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Purdue Men’s Swimming & Diving won six more events Saturday and those victories coupled with a 1-2 finish in the 200 backstroke helped the Boilermakers top No. 23 Florida State 352.5-347.5 at the two-day Seminole Fall Classic.

Purdue won 10 of the 22 events but managed to win the head-to-head matchup with the Seminoles by posting a pair of 1-2 finishes coupled with a trio of 2-3 showings in the individual events. Florida State did not go 1-2 in any event and had just one 2-3 finish.

The Boilermakers traveled 15 student-athletes for their season-opening meet and overcame a six-point deficit (166.5-160.5) in the team scoring entering Saturday’s action.

The meet was contested outdoors at the Morcom Aquatics Center and due to Hurricane Isaias, Georgia Tech opted not to travel for the meet as originally scheduled. The top two finishers from both teams were designated as the scoring entries and only one relay was scored per team. Purdue and FSU split the four relays – the Boilers winning the medleys and the Noles the freestyles (all 100- and 200-yard events).

“Really proud of the way these guys came together this morning,” head coach Alex Jerden said. “It wasn’t clear if we would compete today; however, they stayed ready and showed a lot of determination. Honestly, it’s pretty close to a perfect matchup for us with FSU. It felt like almost every race was a close battle, and we love that – it brings out the best in everyone. They kept us sharp both days. This is a good first step for us. Lot of season left, but that said, we are excited to come back next year!”

Blake Rowe and Dylan Burau went 1-2 in the 200 backstroke at the Seminole Fall Classic for the second year in a row. Purdue’s other 1-2 finish was Zach Welsh and Kaden Springfield, Friday in 3-meter diving. Eight different Boilermakers won an individual event in Tallahassee.

Freshmen Aran Bissett (100 free) and Tom Jhang (100 breast) won events Saturday. Bissett and classmate Luca Scampicchio also contributed to Purdue’s victorious 100 medley relay Saturday. Jhang won the 100 breast by .02 hundredths of a second in the tightest finish of the meet.

Bissett posted a top-10 time in team history for the second day in a row while winning the 100 free in 43.14.

Evan Mackesy (500 free) was an event winner at the Seminole Fall Classic for the second year in a row after touching first in the 200 IM last year. Tyler Wills’ victory on 1-meter Saturday gave Purdue a sweep of the diving events.

Jānis Dzirkalis, Nathaniel Thomas and Scampicchio contributed to each of the Boilers’ medley relay winners.

Purdue is back in action Saturday, Oct. 24 for its home opener, the annual Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate. It’s a co-ed showcase featuring teams from around the state of Indiana.
