A Port St. Lucie family is grieving after their German shepherd was struck and killed by a truck in a hit-and-run incident caught on camera, prompting an animal control investigation.
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. —
A Port St. Lucie family is seeking justice after their German shepherd, Titus, was struck and killed by a truck in a hit-and-run incident last Tuesday on Goodman Avenue.
“I want justice served because you didn’t stop; you killed my dog after you hit him,” Michelle Baker, Titus’ owner, said.
Michelle and Dillon Baker, parents of two young children, are struggling to explain the loss to their 11-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter.
The incident occurred around noon when the family’s dogs hopped the fence and ran down the road. Despite efforts to track them using GPS collars, the Bakers were unable to locate the dogs in time.
“He knew he hit something because he stopped, then he kept going,” Dillon Baker said.
Surveillance footage shows a silver truck hitting Titus, stopping briefly, and then continuing to drag the dog down the road before running him over.
“My dog did not deserve to go out like that,” Michelle Baker said.
The driver did not return to the scene, and animal control is investigating the incident as a hit-and-run. The family believes the act constitutes animal cruelty.
“That’s a crime, that’s a full-on crime, it’s murder,” Michelle Baker said.
Back at the Baker home, Gypsy, who witnessed the incident, has not been the same since Titus’ death. The family has a message for the driver.
“Pay attention, pay attention and care about what’s on the road in front of you,” Michelle Baker said.
WPBF contacted animal control for further comment on the incident; as of Monday night, they have not responded.
