STUART, Fla. —
Martin County commissioners advanced a proposed one-year moratorium on new applications for large-scale data centers during the first of two public hearings.
The moratorium would temporarily prevent the county from accepting applications for large-scale data centers in unincorporated areas. County officials said the pause would give staff members time to study the projects’ potential effects and develop specific regulations.
Officials are expected to examine concerns including water use, power demand and the effect data centers could have on nearby communities, wildlife and other natural resources.
Nearly a dozen people spoke during the hearing, all in support of the proposal. Commissioners agreed, saying more research is needed before the county considers allowing large data centers.
“Given the opportunity to just say, ‘Let’s do some research. Let’s hear about them,’ I think it’s reasonable what I believe we’re asking,” one commissioner said.
One speaker urged commissioners to examine possible consequences for people and animals.
“There needs to be a lot more research on the effects to humans, wildlife and farm animals, so I would appreciate the passing of this moratorium,” the speaker said.
Others said the county must weigh the growth of artificial intelligence and other technologies against the resources required to operate data centers.
“Balancing technological innovation with ethical resource management, community well-being and ecosystem protection is critical,” one speaker said.
County staff members said there are no pending applications for large-scale data centers in unincorporated Martin County.
Commissioners agreed that more information is needed as the county considers how to regulate such developments.
The second and final public hearing is scheduled for Oct. 27. If commissioners give the measure final approval, the moratorium will remain in effect for one year.
