A Cape Coral woman says she felt fear and uncertainty after a pellet shot into her lanai while she was sitting outside on Southeast 13th Terrace.
“It was scary at the time because we did not know. We didn’t know what it was,” said Deb Kowalkoski, the victim.
Cape Coral police confirmed they responded to the home after the shot was fired Sunday. Kowalkoski said she initially thought it was a real gunshot and called 911.
“The screen took away some of the velocity. It was scary at the time because we did not know. We didn’t know what it was and that’s why we decided to call 911, because we just didn’t know,” Kowalkoski said.
Police later determined the shot came from a high-powered pellet gun. Kowalkoski said learning this brought her some relief.
“Yeah, it definitely makes me feel better,” she said.
Kowalkoski said she was sitting in her chair when the pellet came across the canal and hit her lanai. New video shows the hole left by the pellet and neighbors like Katherine Borden said people in the area sometimes shoot iguanas.
“We have rocks on some of the seawalls, and the iguanas like to sun there and so maybe they thought they do a little target practice and didn’t realize the consequences,” Borden said.
Kowalkoski said the incident has left her spouse feeling uneasy, and she now questions the safety of sitting outside in her lanai.
“I guess the more people that know out there that knows that and actually think about what they’re doing maybe the story is worth it,” Kowalkoski said.
Cape Coral police said the shooting is still under investigation.
