The Jacksonville Zoo announced Wednesday the anticipated birth of Kimia the Bonobo’s baby. This will be the zoo’s first bonobo birth in more than 10 years.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Zoo & Botanical Gardens shared exciting news Wednesday for one of its animals: Kimia the bonobo is healthy and is approaching her expected birth window.
The Zoo’s Animal Care and Veterinary teams are closely monitoring Kimia and ensuring she remains comfortable as they await the arrival of her baby bonobo.
First announced in June, Kimia’s pregnancy marks an exciting milestone for the zoo. Throughout her pregnancy, Kimia has been able to choose between indoor and outdoor spaces based on her comfort.
Bonobos are native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and have a pregnancy period of about eight months. They are classified as an endangered species.
A spokesperson with the Jacksonville Zoo said in a statement, “We’re grateful to share Kimia’s pregnancy journey with you and look forward to sharing the next chapter when her baby arrives. We can’t wait to introduce the newest member of the Zoo’s bonobo family!”
The upcoming birth for Kimia will be the zoo’s first bonobo birth in more than 10 years, making it an important moment for both the zoo and bonobo family.
