Ever wondered what the Rickenbacker Causeway could look like if someone dreamed big? Here’s your chance to have your opinion help shape it before the plans are finalized.

The Key Biscayne Community Foundation is hosting The Shoreline Pop-Up this Thursday, Oct. 15, from 1-4 p.m. at 3602 Rickenbacker Causeway, directly across from MAST Academy.

The free, open-air event is open to residents, students and visitors.

Attendees can view the future shoreline on project boards, explore a scaled sandbox model and talk directly with the people shaping the project, including urban designer Juan Mullerat of Plusurbia. Organizers are asking the public to share ideas and feedback on the project’s direction while there’s still time to influence the outcome. There will also be ping-pong, cornhole and a beach lounge with a local vendor.

The location is no accident. Holding the event across from MAST Academy puts students, the generation that will inherit this waterfront, at the center of the conversation about one of Miami’s most iconic gateways to Biscayne Bay, Virginia Key and Key Biscayne.

The Shoreline is arguably the most visionary – and hotly debated – idea to surface for the causeway in decades. Miami-Dade Commissioner Raquel Regalado has presented it as a way to build a viaduct over Virginia Key and create new beaches for Miami residents, following the model of the Underline, another project she championed.

Key Biscayne has already put money behind it. The Village Council approved $950,000 last November to move forward with the Shoreline design, with Mayor Joe Rasco arguing that the causeway is Key Biscayne’s issue and the island needs to invest in finding solutions. The plan has its skeptics too, including Council Member Ed London, who questioned it during that discussion.

Thursday is a low-key way to see the concept in three dimensions, ask hard questions and form your own opinion before the next round of public debate.
