Over the summer, Earthlings saw Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune align in the morning sky. Thirteen months earlier, a similar six-planet alignment swapped Venus for Mars. The skies don’t get to see that kind of theater often.
Another rare celestial occurrence happened last June when Soccer Mommy and Snail Mail announced a co-headlining tour with two Florida stops, including one in Tampa this weekend.
Fans of the beloved rock bands had waited over a decade for the announcement and have apparently been a little shellshocked and ridiculously reverent about it, too.

“Too respectful,” Lindsey Jordan, who founded Snail Mail in 2015, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. The 27-year-old was talking about a new generation of indie-rock fans who notice her outside the venue but refuse to bother her.
“They’re too shy, or they think it’s shitty, a boundary pushing imposition, but what it really is is a part of the job,” Jordan said, adding that they would totally make the ask. “Don’t just stare at me. I’ll walk away. I’m happy to do it.”
On a Zoom call with Creative Loafing Tampa Bay after a soundcheck in Wisconsin last Friday, Jordan wouldn’t speak for her tourmate, but promised she herself does not bite. “Sophie will bite. It’s crazy,” she laughed.
“I will give you the signature. You’re just gonna get bitten,” Sophie Allison replied, cracking up.
It’s not surprising to see the duo, which came up together playing the house show scene in Nashville, in a great mood. For as much as fans have been wishing for the 19-stop tour that started late last month, Jordan and Allison, 29, have waited just as long.
The two are real life best friends, and not having the pressure of making new friends with tourmates is just one of the perks of this run where they’re both pals with the openers, too. “Everything is super open and everybody wants to hang out. It’s great,” Allison, who also started her band in 2015, said.
Jordan agreed, adding that it’s nice to be on the road with people that don’t make her nervous. “Sometimes I feel like I’m just gonna be a really like ugly version of myself, or like they’re gonna get sick of me or something, or I’m gonna get sick of them,” she added.
Not even close with Allison. Jordan said music friendships can be deeper than ones that are outside of the industry.
There’s not a lot of handwringing when it comes to the work of being on tour either. Snail Mail is supporting Ricochet, which dropped in March, and Soccer Mommy is between albums, having recently released a one-off single, “Rings of Saturn,” which she told CL should not be an indication of the sound on any new full-lengths.
“I think it’s in the direction, maybe,” Allison said. “It was more kind of a chance to experiment with some new stuff, with a different type of sound, and just take a song that would just not get made otherwise, and try to make something fun with it.”

They alternate slots each night and play a few covers together: “Vapour Trail” by Ride, and one from Liz Phair.
“I’m thinking about learning a new one. So there might be more coming,” Allison said.
“We’ve got another one too that’s in the books. That comes along with a surprise appearance,” Jordan promised.
In between that practice though, is just hanging out.
They see movies together on off days. “Primetime” got a screening, but Jordan missed “Other Mommy” because she was taking care of her American Eskimo dog Pip, who is on tour with her.
On the call, they both nerded out over Allison’s advanced copy of the new Jane Schoenbrun book “Public Access Afterworld,” and mentioned that they saw the director and author a few days ago.
“I really want a signed copy,” Jordan said.
“You probably got one, too,” Allison replied, alluding to the green room gift bag from Madison bookseller A Room of One’s Own.
“I hope so,” Jordan added.
The PS5 Jordan used to lug on tour has been retired after some controllers were damaged, so she’s rocking the Steam Deck instead. Allison, for her part, is taking a break from “Stardew Valley” and playing “Fields of Mistria” instead.
Their only regret, perhaps, is that the tour won’t find them together on the greatest holiday in the calendar year.
“I’m playing a Halloween show like a fucking idiot,” Jordan joked. “Gotta send Pip to college.”
At the end of the day, Jordan and Allison are just happy to be on the road, and at work, together, celebrating with a fanbase that’s pretty much just as supportive.
“I actually feel like we have known each other for a really long time,” Jordan noted, looking at Allison. “This. This is my friend.”
“I like having friends,” Allison added. “I don’t like making them.”
