Poyser ejected, Fitzgerald hurt … defense still gets a stop

Miami’s secondary was hit with a double-dose of bad news.

First, Bryce Fitzgerald went to the locker room with an upper-body injury. Then, safety Zechariah Poyser was ejected for targeting on FSU quarterback Ashton Daniels.

Despite the absences of two key members of Miami’s secondary, the defense still forced a turnover on downs by stuffing FSU on a fourth and goal attempt from the 2-yard line to maintain the 7-0 lead.

Miami up 7-0 on FSU with 7:32 left in the first quarter.

Two of Darian Mensah’s bigger throws on the drive to set up the score: An 18-yard catch-and-run with Cooper Barkate on third down to get Miami to near midfield and a 30-yard contested catch up the middle by Malachi Toney to get the Hurricanes just outside the red zone — both on third down. Miami went 3 for 3 on third down.

The Seminoles got to near midfield on their opening drive, but Miami’s defense held for a stop to force an FSU punt.
