JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two women were killed while crossing Atlantic Boulevard in separate crashes less than 24 hours apart, authorities said.
The first crash happened after 11 p.m. Friday near Indian Springs Drive. A 54-year-old Jacksonville woman was walking south across the road when the front right corner of an eastbound SUV hit her, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV’s driver, a 48-year-old Jacksonville woman, and a 13-year-old passenger were not injured. FHP said charges are pending.
Around 9 p.m. Saturday, a woman in her early 60s was walking north across the 10000 block of Atlantic Boulevard near the Regency area when she was hit by a silver Infiniti, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was cooperating with authorities, JSO said.
Neither woman was in a marked crosswalk, according to investigators.
Residents who spoke with News4JAX said they want changes to make the busy stretch safer. One resident said they had seen “too many accidents,” including rear-end crashes and collisions involving drivers entering a dealership.
Keonte Hutson said driving on the road at night feels more dangerous and called for better organization at the intersection of Brookview Road and Atlantic Boulevard.
Another resident said increased traffic enforcement could help, saying an officer could catch “10, 20 speeders every day.”
JSO said Saturday’s crash was Duval County’s 131st traffic fatality this year and its 32nd involving a pedestrian.
