October 19, 2026 – Researchers at the University of South Florida and Florida Atlantic University have “demonstrated that a promising DNA sequencing tool can rapidly identify harmful algae in coastal waters,” according to a prepared statement. The scientists utilized the Oxford Nanopore MinION in a study published in the PLOS Water journal. Harmful agal bloom species were identified at 20 sites across Florida’s Indian River Lagoon. The researchers “found 11 harmful algal bloom species, including species responsible for brown and red tides, with some at very low concentrations.” For more information, visit this link.
