PORT ST. LUCIE – Humane Society of St. Lucie County is now caring for more than 100 cats and kittens recently rescued from a Port St. Lucie home in an alleged hoarding situation, according to a Humane Society Facebook posting.

“These animals arrived at our shelter in need of medical attention and nourishment. Most of the felines were infested with fleas and suffering from ear mites, and some had open sores requiring immediate treatment. We have moms and babies of all ages, with three females giving birth shortly after their rescue,” the non-profit, no-kill organization wrote in its posting. “One of these mamas was too weak to care for her babies, so her kittens were rushed to an emergency foster home where they are receiving the round-the-clock care they need.”

The Port St. Lucie Police Department is actively investigating the situation to determine if charges will be filed. Since it is an active investigation, the department is not releasing details for now about the address.

“At this time, the case is active and assigned to our criminal investigations division, and I am waiting to hear whether any charges will be filed,” Officer Brittany McNally said in an email. “However, we are monitoring it closely, and in the event an arrest is made, we will be speaking about it soon.”

The Humane Society is in need of donations and volunteers to help care for the felines.
