Cape Coral’s proposed Bimini East development has sparked concerns from residents about its scale and impact, as city leaders hold a final public hearing on the project.

Cape Coral city leaders are holding the second and final public hearing Wednesday on the proposed $500 million Bimini East development, a 34-acre mixed-use project near Bimini Basin that aims to transform the waterfront into a walkable destination.

The plans include up to 900 residential units, 250 hotel rooms, restaurants, retail spaces, medical offices, and a marina with 50 boat slips. The goal is to connect the area with the South Cape entertainment district and bring more activity to Bimini Basin.

While city leaders see the project as an opportunity to revitalize the waterfront, some residents have expressed concerns about its scale and potential impact on the community.

“I’m concerned about its effects on our property and the neighboring properties. I’m concerned about how big it’s going to be and just towering over our small buildings,” said Lorrie Cummings, who lives next to Four Freedoms Park.

Four Freedoms Park, located near the proposed development, is also part of the discussion, with plans to keep it a public park while modifying its amenities.

Cummings acknowledged the potential benefits of the project, saying, “To see something that’s useful here with shops and restaurants, I think would be a nice addition. I know they’re turning it into like a walkable city, and already the city of Cape Coral has made so many additions to their downtown that have been so nice for all the residents.”

The city has been working on the project for years, from acquiring property to negotiating with developers. Residents are hopeful for an outcome that will benefit the community for years to come.

Wednesday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
