STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — A Stuart man allegedly tried to turn stolen tires into quick cash on Facebook Marketplace — but detectives say they caught up with him during a planned sale.
James Sewell was arrested Sept. 5 after Stuart police detectives tracked a listing for tires believed to be stolen property, the Stuart Police Department said.
The investigation began after police received reports of tires being stolen from local car dealerships. During a patrol, an officer spotted a suspicious truck abandoned behind a dealership with several tires in the truck bed.

Investigators determined the tires were stolen and believe the officer’s presence may have spooked the suspect, prompting them to abandon the truck while the thefts were ongoing.
Detectives later found a Facebook Marketplace listing offering tires believed to be stolen. They arranged a meeting with the seller and caught up with Sewell that evening, according to the Stuart Police Department.
Sewell allegedly had four stolen tires he was trying to sell.
He was arrested and charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen property. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues, the department said.
