Carson ZornCAPE CORAL, Fla. —

A woman was arrested on Tuesday in Cape Coral after being accused of causing a car crash while drunk driving with a child in the car.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department arrest report, officers responded to reports of a crash in the parking lot of the Walmart located on Northeast Pine Island Road at around 5:24 p.m.

Officers conducted a crash investigation and found that a maroon Chevrolet Traverse, driven by Stephanie Mederos, pulled out in front of a vehicle turning into the parking lot, causing a crash, CCPD said. The other driver involved in the crash told officers that following the collision, Mederos got out of her vehicle and began swearing at the other driver.

Officers noted that Mederos had a child in the car at the time of the crash, and that the child was not properly secured in a booster seat or car seat, the report said. Officers spoke with Mederos and noticed that she was displaying several signs of being drunk, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, a flushed red face, and a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.

Mederos was asked to participate in Standard Field Sobriety exercises and was unable to complete them to officers’ satisfaction, the report said. Officers asked Mederos to provide a breath sample, but she refused.

Mederos was arrested and faces charges of DUI with a person under 18 years of age in the vehicle, DUI property damage, refusal to submit to DUI testing and neglect of a child.
